RECREATION AREA AT DAVIS CREEK RESERVOIR DAMAGED BY STORM

The Davis Creek Recreation Area south of North Loup sustained heavy damage in severe thunderstorm activity on Monday evening, June 20th. Restroom structures and about 60 percent of the trees at the facility, owned by the Lower Loup Natural Resources District, were damaged by the storm’s force. Lower Loup NRD General Manager Leon “Butch” Koehlmoos said that the camping area at the facility was opened to the public when downed trees were removed.

Koehlmoos said the roof of the ADA Compliant restrooms was completely detached from the structure and blown several hundred feet away. He said that the force was strong enough to also take the top two layers of concrete blocks off the restroom building, which is located north of the rec area’s boat ramps. That facility will remain closed to the public.

Koehlmoos said a second set of restrooms, located by a picnic structure near the main entrance to the recreation area, also suffered some roof damage, but is open for use. NRD officials have been notified by the National Weather Service that the damage was done by an EF1 tornado, which can pack winds of 86 to 110 miles per hour.
